Twice!
1997 DR650 at about 70,000 mi. New seal and added a seal retainer.
Same bike did it again at 93k. Seal retainer didn't do squat.
For the next seal I added a bead of RTV around the OD to help hold the seal in place and put the retainer back on but don't see how it could do anything.
There's about a 1/4" gap between the seal and retainer.
Currently at 98,000 miles and going strong. Gotta love the durability of these beasts!
wow. 98,000 miles is a great thing! Bike has been trouble free for the most part?

Not all 2013 bikes have the retainer.
Suzuki started installing them somewhere in the middle of the production run.

Yes. 2001 650SE, bought with 11k miles on it, put around 3k myself. Riding home from work, about 30 degrees F outside, noticed rear wheel completely slipping on startup from stoplights. Got home and saw it pouring oil, and the chain, wheel, and sprocket were covered in warm oil.

Took the sprocket off and the seal was hanging halfway out; tapped it back in snug, put some oil in the bike and started up in neutral, the seal turned with the shaft for 5 seconds and drove itself right out again...

Ordered new seal and retainer off eBay (genuine Suzuki part, number 24751-32E00), will update with results...

I think it's ridiculous that this is even an issue. "Hey, that seal that holds the lifeblood of your engine inside will sometimes just pop out and maybe kill you and your engine lol kool."

Yup. Purchased my 2013 new, and later added a countershaft seal retainer.

No on my 2005. But that was one of the first things I did to my bike. It's a cheap fix that is priceless for the peace of mind. Before I installed the retainer it was always in the back of my mind when riding. Especially on long highway trips. A few dollars well spent.

Mine technically did not "blow" out.. it just developed a substantial leak. I have an '07 with 15,XXX km's on it. I pulled the seal last night and can't seem to find any noticeable damage to it. Could just be old and shrunk a bit. The oil seemed to be coming from the seal mating surface but there's no way of knowing for sure now. I have ordered 3 new seals in case I mess up the install. I am planning on just coating the mating surface and seal surface with grease first to see what happens. If that doesn't work I will put a light coat of Ultra Black on the mating surface and let cure. I also have the retainer installed.

whatever you do, do NOT push the seal too much in as there is an pressurized oil passage right after it and you must not block it in any way (if I remember well, that is... :s_thinking )
