This is how I bought her in 2006. 700 miles and equipped with quite a few extras.

Image
Started out with a few solo local rides to the Sierra to try out various luggage arrangements.

Image
One of the first group rides on my DR650 going way back to 2006. Four days, California central coast, Big Sur, Los Padres and lots more. Here you see just a few of the DR's in my riding group. We now have 6 members riding DR's in all ... and no one has lost a 3rd gear! :search:

Image
This ride always includes a stop at the Mission San Antonio, one of about 10 throughout California. This one from early 1800's.
Image
Carrizo Plain ... a weird and unique place to ride.
Image
Early morning heading down See Canyon, near Pismo Beach, mostly unknown roads.
Image
Very challenging road ... just pure fun on the DR650.
Since 2006 I've done this ride 3 or 4 more times, same basic route. Stay tuned for more and varied adventures featuring
the DR650.

More from 2006 ....
A few local rides done later in the year and another down to Death Valley and the Mojave Desert. I've been riding the Mojave since age 15 ... I'm now 64. This ride is more Death Valley, not many pics.

These rides typically have two contingencies, street & dirt riders. We all do the paved route down to Death Valley, then the dirt group does their thing exploring. The street guys ride out to the Whore houses in Beatty, NV! :rose:

Typical Fall day in the Wine country
Image
On the way to DV via the Pinnacles near Trona
Image
Headed down to Goler Wash and Charlie Manson's shack (has been torched since)
Image
Some rough, rocky terrain here, marginal traction with street tires
Image
High winds meant poor camping conditions. Most stayed in Motel in the distance.
Image
More Pinnacles ... note, early on I had no barkbusters. They come later. Of course I always carry a set of levers.

Day trips around Death Valley ... luggage stays in camp!

Spring of 2007 I rode out to Moab, Utah. Friends trucked their bikes out. They packed knobbies for me, and I swapped them over when I got there. This was during the so called "gas crisis" and fuel was going for around 4.50 to 4.70 per US gallon. Fuel bill for my DR was about $100 each way, my buddies motor home cost him around $1000. I froze over the Sierra but after that it was tolerable. Moab was fantastic, perfect damp conditions. Four days of riding bliss ... then a long, cold 1000 mile ride back to the Bay Area.

Part of the crew ... minus two more DR650's not shown.

Bruce on his lowered, yellow DR. He's just 5'5". Gets along fine.

Thanks for taking the time to post your past and present adventures. :good: Maybe we need to brake this out in chapters, because I have a feeling this one is going to be worthy. :dirol:

In my mind that scenery is normally associated with TCM movies and the sound of ricocheting .30-30 bullets with Cowboys and Indians running around everywhere! :shoot: or....... meep meep! Road Runner, the Coyote's after you! :tease:
Yes I'm totally Green with envy! :s_mad Thanks for sharing..... More please.... I like pain. :s_biggrin
