I chose to go with the 7/8 Pro Taper bar over the fat Bars becase i did not want to spend the money for oversized clamps and on a Dual Sport bike I did not see the need. (personal oppinion). I chose to use Pro Tapers over renthal because they seem to have a better fit and finish, although there is nothing wrong with a set of renthals they are too excellent bars. might i add the flat black bars with the yellow and white writing and yellow and black bar pad looks nice on a DR. I purchased these bars with the pad at cycle gear for $79.99 and $12.99 for the grips

NOTE: The bend is all rider preference and may not be suitable for you depending on how you are shaped and how you like to ride. I am and 5'8 and a Very agressive rider, off road i ride standing up, elbows up, and i like to be able to transfer my weight over the front end for charging corners and to move my weight around in the air, therefore I elected a bend with a lower rise (Reed/Henry bend). many bends are avaible in the SE series vairying from very minimal rise to a large rise.

Installation: it was a rather straight forward job, the bars are a nice width no cutting for me was required and everything fitted on the bars with room to spare, they were scribed to be cut down for rider preference from the factory. The only modification that has to be made is either removing the pin from the turn signal/high/low beam switch, or drilling a hole in the bars for it to rest in.

Grips: I chose to use the Pro Taper Pillow top grips, they come in two different sized regular and small. ive used both on my race bike and i found that the regular pillow top grips are better for me, i have large hands and the small pillow tops make the diameter of the grip too small for me, which made my hands sore and gave me more arm pump.

Riding: with the bars installed and riding the bike down the road i noticed immediately the diffence in the bend, and that they were slightly wider and i liked it, the bike felt much more controlable probably due to the extra minimal width and the best of all they did not tire my arms after a two hour road ride. Off road is where these bars Shined, i was able to stand up in a much better position, making it much easier to navigate through roots, rocks, and ruts, the new bars also made it easeier to keep proper form on the track in corners..........not that most people will be motocrossing a Dr650 lol.

Durability: Well i have been down on them once myself, along with two of my friends wrecking it (all off road) and the bars remain straight as a arrow, and the gips held up very well did not even show a scuff. so far I have about 900 miles on the bars and i have no regrets.

Hope the write up helps any of you who have been eye balling a set of these bars.

Yup, I have a set of the Pro Taper se bars also, and retrofitted some Cycra guards to it also. :whistling: I actually ended up getting the atv mid height version to fit me correctly. Between those and the lowered pegs it is very comfortable to stand while riding,,,even down the highway at speed when you need to stretch. Shifting, braking, clutching etc. is very simple to do while standing with my setup without having to install any risers. They are a good buy, and with a couple of slow speed spills in the woods,,,dang hidden wet sticks under the leaves,,,they have held up perfectly.

My only complaint about the two sets of Pro Taper aluminum bars I bought for the wife's and my DR650 is they increased vibration. At least they did on how we have the machines set up with Moose bark busters and the larger guards. I even tried the Vibranators to reduce the hand buzzing. Still too buzzy so I removed them..... Yet I've seen plenty of posts about the Pro Taper 7/8 bars working well with no increase in vibration. :dunno:

I have the pro taper CR Hi bars on mine. I really like them, I didn't notice any increase in vibration. I have the pro taper ATV Hi bars on my TW200 I really like those as well.

I had the SE Henry/Reed bend on my KLR and while I liked the bars, I did notice an increase in vibration over the stock bars. I even added expensive Vibranators and they still didn't seem as good as the stock bars with stock bar ends. For the DR I have added Faast Flex bars to hopefully help my wrists which kill me after an hour in the dirt.

+1 I noticed the same thing on both my 99 DR650 and the wife's 05 DR650 with the SE bars. Even tried the Vibranators like you did. I ended up ditching the SE's.

I'm running ProTaper SE In the KX high bend. I didn't notice any excesive vibration...sorry Rob. Though I also have a a set of HDB hand guards which ties the end of the bars back to the risers so that may help dampen the vibration.

Yeah, I have the Moose Bark Busters (which tie into the bar ends) on both of our machines. More vibration than the stock steel bars. Maybe the particular bend? Can't remember which bend I chose at the time. :dunno:
