I got it up over 100 mph and, with my bags loaded and the wind blowing across the track, it started this big, large amplitude, low frequency, wobble. I thought; I'm more than 3,500 kilometres from home, there isn't another human being within a radius of a couple miles, nobody has any clue as to where I am and an "off" would not be beneficial to the rest of my trip so I chickened out and, gently, backed off. I had plenty of close calls during that trip without intentionally poking the sleeping tiger.

That is impressive, I can't say I have had anything on two wheels go that fast.
So how does it work on the Sand Flats, can you just drive/ride out there and give 'er or is there certain places and times you have to go?

You drive out to the end of this secondary road and just ride off the pavement. ( http://tinyurl.com/6c4y3nn ) From there, its all up to you. I've been there twice. Once, in a car, the salt was slightly rough with ripples, almost like raised veins all over it. Second time, on my V-Strom, you could see where they had prepped a line about 3 lanes wide, where the salt was nice and smooth. I was out there, in the middle of no where, eating my lunch and this speck appeared in the distance. Closer, bigger, closer, bigger, start to hear the motor and then woooosssh, a kid flashed by, laying on the gastank, peeking over the bars, feet on the rear pegs, on a XR650L. After he passed me you could hear him back off the throttle and shift down a couple of times. He came back, stopped, pulled off his helmet (with the plastic mohawk stuck on it) to show a huge grin. He's asking how he looked, telling me his speedo was readying over 100 mph, he was al amped. Pretty funny.

I am surprised that they leave it s free for all, you would think that people would get greased out there with everyone ripping around at high speed I am also surprised that the salt changes, I just never thought it would. Thanks for the info. The salt fields are near a place where I might hunt one day so it is a must visit if I make it. Thanks for the info

I'm hoping to get up to the L'Anse au Meadows/Saint Anthoney area of Newfoundland in July. From where I'm at hear near Amherst Nova Scotia it would be about a 2500 km return trip, thinking 6 to 7 days travel time. I will likely be riding two up with my 12 yr old son as well by brother may tag along on his 650 V-Strom. We're planning to camp the entire trip and the hope is that there will still be icebergs around when we get there. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the passenger more comfortable?

I would like to do this, as I posted on my blog some time back. I don't know if I will make it this year or not. Might be a nice mid-September ride. All back roads except for one little stretch on I-40 in Tennessee. Click the "view larger map" link under the map and it will also show you the directions. Or zoom in to see all the smaller highways. http://www.rideindiana.info/2010/10/rid ... meday.html
