This is always interesting to me. The DR650 seems to attract a mid-life crowd.

I was on one of the other forums a year or so back and these guys were talking about why they bought DR's. Seemed to be because of a mid life crisis....lol.
Oh wait....that's me.

I bought my DR with the intention of doing some backroad exploring. Since then I've found it's been great for that and also longer roadtrips. As I'm older, I've been happy to take things a bit slower and see more along the way. And I still scare myself once in a while to remind myself I'm still alive. The DR doesn't look anything like other bikes I have owned, but it's probably the one I've had the most fun on.

I purchased my used 99 solely as a transportation device over the US and Mexican borders. I did a daily trip to Mexico from San Diego and back for a year in 06 and 07. The roads in TJ are pretty trashed so it was a no brainer for a dual sport machine. The reason for the bike at all was the border crossing itself. On a bike you could go right to the front of the huge lines coming back into the states. If not for that special assignment job I may never have entered into the dual sport realm.

I am the young buck in the crowd. I got a DR cause I could trade some rifles for it and save my $$$ for diapers Plus it is so darn easy to fix by myself, keeping more $$$ for diapers. And I love pulling up to the shopping store with my thumping tractor ....... to buy some more diapers

I like simple mechanical things and I am glad to say I don't need a red convertible or a shiny P.O.S. Hardly Ableson for my mid-life crisis.

I haven't voted yet because I don't own a DR yet. Hopefully I'll manage ownership before I hit the next age group.
