We are the 21% I bought my dr after having three cruisers. My third cruiser was almost perfect for me, but I have always been an offroad guy and had wanted a dual sport. I was getting tired of the loud pipes, and I wanted something I could get more use out of than just cruising. I started saving up some cash and looking for a cheap dual sport 250 to use as a second bike. A friend of mine (48 years of age) mentioned that he may sell his dr650 if I was really interested. It was a little bigger than what I wanted, but the price, mileage, year, and condition were all right. I was much more comfortable buying a newer bike from someone I knew. After getting used to the way it rode, I sold the crap out of my cruiser... I love this thing, wouldn't trade it for anything else. Beats the crap out of a cruiser any day.

I'm 43 and I traded an 08 Banshee for my 07 DR. The Banshee was fun but there was only so many burnouts and donuts I could do. I use the DR to explore the backroads and trails with my son on his TTR110. (he is 8). I had a KLR650 a few years ago and found it great for highways and dirt roads but terrible in the slower stuff. So far I'm loving the DR. I also have an 08 Buell Xb12Ss for the road.

I find it amusing that 40ish guys see themselves as "old men" . --- Hell , --- they're barely past puberty . --- I'm 74 and have been riding since 1954 aaaaand am looking at the 2012 DR650 now . --- I just have to convince the WARDEN that I absolutely need a new bike again . --- If you stay in shape (weightlifting , calisthenics , jogging etc.) age is only a number . --- When I was still in my 40s almost nothing fazed me . "Extra-curricular-activities" in bars etc. were considered stimulating work-outs . --- Nowadays I've slowed down a bit but ain't dead yet . --- So come on , guys , you're still in the prime of your lives . Enjoy and keep your heads up .

My first road worthy bike after getting a drivers license was a dual sport although at the time (1976) it was called and Enduro. A Suzuki TS185, great bike. Since then I have had all sorts of bikes (all Japanese). I currently own a Suzuki VSTROM DL1000 for commuting and backroad fun, a Honda Goldwing for longer trips with my SO (she won't let me trade it) and the DR for trail riding. I have come to enjoy my DR more than anything else and given the choice of what type of riding to do, the dirt is always my first choice.

I fall into the early 20's group, with a much older personality.
I guess despite my age, I've gotten tired of "go fast, crash and burn" riding. more or less because I've seen too much of it, and I'm trying to simply enjoy riding WITHOUT being stupid and going 120+ down the road. believe me, on my CBR I still have that temptation too.

i'm an 8 percenter. For about 20 years alas a young father I rode a XR500. I had to sell it for expenses one year, and now, as a "senior citizen" I finally got a DR. It proved itself in 5 miles of hell in Moab. Wow! What a great bike. You guys all made good decisions getting DRs. It keeps me feeling young. This is an awesome awesome forum, keep it up.

Turning 51 next month. Bought the DR 5 years ago. I can ride anything I want, still in good enough shape to run the bases and dive into home plate. But the DR just works for me, powerful enough to be fun without killing myself, light enough to muscle around, big enough to tour long distance, dirty enough to get me around through the Montana Rockies.
I wish I was 21 and knew what I know now, I'd get me a bike like this and pack it up & tour America for like 2 years.

I'm 30, I heard it's all down hill from there. Anyways, I figured I'd better give up the sportbikes before I ended up in jail or dead. Was never really a cruiser guy. I love dirtbikes but couldn't ride on the road(legally). So dualsport it was. To buy a KTM/BMW, that's enough $$ to buy a really nice sports car. Narrowed it down to XR,KLR and DR. XR too tall, I'm not knocking the KLR but it just didn't seem as bad azz as the DR. Plus I love the mods like the fcr carb that really makes it feel like my ole CRF 450. Twist right hand front end comes up. DR 650 #1 in my book.
