Ive seen axle, peg, and handlebar sliders...frame doesn't usually touch the ground in a slide. Best protection would be a skid plate, case guards and some alum. hand guards. I recently went down HARD at ~60mph...hand guards, shifter and peg took most of the damage.

+1 Frame sliders are normally used on perimeter framed sport bikes where the frame is actually the widest part of the vehicle... not sure there would be any benefit on a narrow DR650 frame. :dunno:

These guys make some cool axle and frame slider stuff... and also do all of the dyno testing on my DR650.

I have seen a set of frame "sliders" before in an online shop, can't remember the shop though. They covered the lower area around the swing arm pivot, engine mounts, ect where the frame is wider. Still trying to find them again.

Those sound like the boot guards to keep from rubbing the paint off the frame with your boots...

If in doubt, lay the bike on its side and see what hits...I've run this "test" on mine way too many times!

I had a low speed (approx. 20-25 mph) low-side on the street with my DR. It went down on the left side, and the part that took the majority of the road rash was the plastic bumper on the outboard side of my Cycra Probends hand guard. This plastic bumper/slider is intentionally sacrificial and a replacement set was only $10.

The peg received some rash on its underside. It folded up during the slide and one of its teeth left a small impression in my frame (barely noticeable). The kickstand suffered some road rash on its lower foot, and it was deflected into the swing arm leaving a small cut in the swing arm's aluminum. In my opinion, the worst permanent damage occurred to the bottom corner of the fork (a little road rash). Had my bike been equipped with axle sliders, my fork would not have received any road rash. I'm thinking of getting a set from here:

Here's a pic of someone else's bike with the full meal deal:

Sounds like I ended up with the exact same damage...hand guard, bottom corner of fork, peg, kick stand into swing arm, etc.

So much for just replacing the hand guard plastic though, burned right into the alum. Might just leave it...sort of a conversation piece:

Hey ROB! Did Scott & Gary at FastbikesUSA develop an axle slider kit for the DR650?

I'm sure they could at least adapt another set or simply sell us some universal Delrin axle sliders that we could adapt ourselves......

I'm torn between using hard skateboards wheels VS..... giving Scott a call.

I never asked Scott about sliders for the DR650..... I'm sure they could modify one of their CNC programs to make a DR650 fitting version though. Good reason to ride your bike over there! :s_biggrin
