They expand inside the bar ends. It doesn't matter if you have 7/8" or 1 1/8" bars because all the kits come with both sizes for steel and aluminum bars. The kit comes with inserts that will expand and secure the handgaurds in the bar ends. The real question is will the handgaurd kit inboard bracket fit the fat bar?
The Protaper fat bars ar 1 1/8" in the middle but they taper to a standard 7/8 at the grip. I personaly have Barkbusters with 7/8" bars now and if I change to a fat bar I would need to replace my handgaurd brackets to accomodate the fatter inboard diameter. Clear as mud right?

They expand inside the bar ends. It doesn't matter if you have 7/8" or 1 1/8" bars because they both have 14mm bar end holes.

Unless you have aluminum 7/8" bars..... :s_wink

It's hard to offer advice without seeing the fastener kit or the bars you have but some fastener kits come with 2 different size threaded plugs for the end of your bars. Most thin walled steel bars take one large diameter size plug to fit in the end, and the thicker walled aluminum bars need to take a smaller diameter size plug. Not to be critical, but all bar ends do not have the same size holes in the end whether they are fatties or not. it simply depends on the wall thickness of the bar not the diameter.

I added a note to my previous post since it was pointed out that I further needed to clarify that ALL handgaurd kits come with 2 sets of inserts to cover your needs. Again, you need to be concerned about your inboard mounting size more than your outboard mounts.

inboard can be adjusted with tape or rubber. i cant get the incerts into the handlebars do i have to coldshrink them and heat my handbars or something stupid like that. do i drill out the bars to a bigger hole??? wack it in with a hammer (id rather not do that but). and i only have those inserts that came with the kit.

Try and call Procycle and give them your part number for better info. I have Barkbusters and they came with 2 different sized inserts to fit any handlebar configurations. It seems you need the smaller 14mm ones and are trying to use the larger ones for the steel OEM bars. If you still have them from your original purchase try the smaller ones that should have came with the handgaurds.
