I just went and measured the OEM headlight, its 6"x4". What if I just buy a 6"x4" HID projector headlight? Power of HID, in a sealed headlight designed for HID. Good or bad idea? ^^interested in 4300K

I had a round version of that projector headlight, dont waste a penny. even with halogen bulbs, those are garbage. the "projector" doesnt really do anything, and the way the inside of the housing is laid out, all that happens, is te light scatters EVERYWHERE. you'd do WAY better with the stock housing and HID, even though it scatters it, its nothing NEAR as bad.
I'll dig mine up and take some pictures of what the light does at night if you'd like. I know I've got an H4 HID laying around, and that craptastic light housing. then I'll shoot one of my GSXR projectors with a halogen in it, just for contrast to show what good focus looks like.

ok thanks alot. also just got the light apart and realized its a trapazoid so i dont think any of the 4x6's will fit without then modifying the fairing, which would probably look like crap. too bad because i found a site that has some nice looking 4x6 hella driving light conversions ready for H4 HID. i really do need to do something about the light output though. so i guess im down to two options, a ddm tuning 35w 4500k hi/lo kit, or some sort of standard halogen bulb thats a hella lot brighter, that doesnt overtax our electrical system.

starting to lean towards the ddm tuning kit (35w hi/lo 4500k), as the best sub $100 headlight renovation mod for night riding. any last words?

bobthebiker wrote: I kind of regret bothering with HID at all because it really doesnt make that much difference. I beg to differ... I've seen a HUGE difference firsthand. I installed a hi/lo HID kit in my wife's DR-Z400SM (identical headlight to the DR) and took come comparison photos. I metered the first shot and locked in those exposure values so that the differing light levels wouldn't be misrepresented by the camera automatically adjusting the exposure. Also of note, my headlight on the DR has been upgraded - I've added the Easter Beaver H4 relay kit and I'm also running a PIAA Intense White bulb - so any difference from a 'stock' headlight & bulb will be even more pronounced than what these photos illustrate. DR H4 Low beam: DR-Z HID low beam: DR H4 high beam DR-Z HID High beam As for the 'scatter', I haven't noticed any great deal of problems with the beam. I've ridden the DR-Z several times after dark and haven't been flashed or high-beamed by anyone. Beyond being able to see better, you're able to BE seen better. Its win/win.

Have you seen this thread on ADVride? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=309439&highlight=lightsThat guy has some good stuff for a little more $. I've been trying to decide too. DDM stuff is drop shipped from China, hence the heavy postage. The guy on ADVrider has some solid looking kit and its supported well from what I've read.
