Traffic light turned green, my bike dies. *&%$!!! Flip to reserve as fast as possible, wait for carb to fill up with a cage coming up fast from behind (they were not paying ANY attention of course!!) Cranked the bike, gassed it and dropped the clutch. Pulled a wheelie 1/2 way across the intersection and lofted the wheel another couple of inches shifting into second on rebound. I'm glad there wasn't a police officer around to see it, even though it was an accident I know I would have been ticketed for it...

Anyone else had something similar happen? (Or am I the only wheelie newb on the forum?)

Well I once broke my clutch lever on a trail so I had to jam the lever against the perch to be able to pull the cable. I'd just get to the friction point of it when it would just rip forward and weee up went the front wheel. Had to clutchless upshift all the time too to get back. God that was an adventure.

on my old XT wheelies were commonplace, simply because for a 600 single, that BEAST had WAY too muh torque. WAY Too much. I recall hitting a major highway once, RIPPING on the throttle to accelerate, and the OH $%*! moment when that front goes skyward came. this happened numerous other times as well. that bike was crazy (I miss it.)

Yeah my dr is the first bike I have had that is capable of doing a wheelie. (except for the little honda 50's and 70's I've ridden  )

I never really thought about it before, now that I know I can do them, it almost makes me want to go out and practice!

My stock DR is not the wheelie machine I thought it would be with 650cc. I was doing a wheelie on my Yami DT 360 once and had the left grip come off mid-wheelie. Your only instinct is to pull on the right grip and you know what that means. A WFO wheelie and pants full of poop. :OMG: :bumps:

Popping the clutch to do a wheelie does not count and is excess wear and tear on the clutch. But my 1st time was not long after I bought the bike, My hand slipped off the clutch lever and whoop :OMG: Now I just roll back on the throttle while already in gear and watch the front wheel rise into the air thanks to the pumper carb. :yahoo:

this depends on if you're stuntng or not. in stunt riding, throttle wheelies are lame. knowing how to control the clutch offers more control.

but, it depends what your intended form of riding is.

Throttle wheelies show how much power and response your bike has. You won't do one with a stock DR that's for sure and I seriously doubt anyone is going to do any stunt riding on one either.you're comparing apples and oranges.

I had a riding lawnmower I could pop the clutch and pull a wheelie, big whoop.

May not "count" for you but it sure as hell counts for me! (It's just not good to do, and just like the title says "accidental")

It just caught me by surprise, and the adrenaline was already pumping watching that car speeding up behind me.

I don't plan on "stunting" with this thing, that's not my cup of tea. Albeit interesting to watch! I don't like abusing my vehicles...much...

I'm surprised that the pumper carb can actually make the dr throttle wheelie capable. I assumed that you had to install a big bore kit for that kind of power. That gives me yet another reason to get the pumper carb....Thanks.... :s_mad

I too had a lawnmower that could wheelie, but no clutch popping necessary. Yours must have been slow... :aggressive:

No big bore needed, just the pumper carb modified air box high flo air filter and a q4 muffler. :woohoo:
