Very good point. When you think of it that way, it really doesn't matter what you wear so long as you are on top of your game. :good:

I agree 100%, try different methods and use what works for you!

I never really considered the hi-viz option before... but after reading a lot in the 'Face Plant' thread over on ADV, I decided to start the transition from stealth to hi-viz before this year's riding season.

My first piece of brightly-coloured bling - a Scorpion EXO900 Transformer in hi-viz yellow:

I also plan to add some reflective vinyl to the rear of the helmet... I'm thinking die-cut red & black reflective for something like this:

After almost hitting a motorcyclist at night on the side of the road a few years ago because he was all dressed in black and he has no reflectors on his bike, I now have added reflective tape to the back of my helmet and the same reflective tape on each front fork leg. I feel a little bit safer knowing that hopefully I will be somewhat visible in the dark if need be.

Voila! Half ambient room lighting, half flash-lit:

I guess I can chime in too... Been riding on the street for about 35 years. Got knocked off at a stop sign from behind for revving my throttle when I was 16 when the lady said I thought you were taking off. Got a good look at the underside of her bumper - no damage to me though.

About 20 years ago I had the summer from hell and almost shelved the road going bikes. Six near death experiences in as many weeks in July/Aug.

Similar thread seems to be that most play "The Game". It's what I call it when you get on the bike and play a personal video game while riding - EVERYONE IS TRYING TO KILL ME and watch the top of their tire for movement and contrast to identify it.

Play the game and you will survive. Visibility can't hurt, but I not a beemer rider playing a European Cop wannabe either. I ride a Yellow CBR900 w/ Yellow helmet and black jacket and rely on superior brakes and acceleration to stay the F away from rolling cages.

I was listening to Bob and Tom on the radio on the way in this morning and they were posing the question as to what would you do if you were invisible. I was thinking to myself - I know I have been just that and it has always been when I'm riding through town on my bike.

Summin it up - Hi viz can't hurt, I hate headlight modulators, but they grab your attention, regardless, at some point some idiot will not see you and you better be ready for it with your front brake covered and your reflexes ready for self preservation.

I found the jpg online somewhere... can't remember where. Cleaned it up and converted into vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator and then sent that file to my buddy's sign & graphics shop. He printed out a sheet of them for me. If you like, I can send you the Illustrator file and you can probably find a local shop willing to do the same for cheap. Just pm me your email address and I'll send it along.

I'm a returning rider newb so take this for what it's worth...

The DoD requires riders on base to wear light/bright colors during the day and reflective striping at night. This wasn't always the case and many gripe about. However, in the local area, it's those wearing DoD-spec hi-viz that are the easiest to see motoring around.

Now hi-viz isn't magic and cagers are always out to kill bikers in a way that makes it look like "an accident," but the hi-viz does increase the riders visual profile. Based on this, I went with a white helmet and wear a neon-yellow/silver reflective vest over my jacket. It looks geeky, no doubt, but I want to minimize the cager's excuses when/if they "don't see me" while DWS (Driving While Stupid). Also, I don't see it while I'm wearing it, so it's those around me that would think I'm a geek--and they'd have to see, recognize and then *think* in order to form that opinion--great, I'm on their radar!

I *think* that hi-viz could be detrimental *if* a rider assumed that being lit up like a Christmas tree would mean that the drivers see them and gets lazy in their situational awareness. If the rider stays on their game *and* wears hi-viz, how can it hurt?

Absolutely nothing wrong with Hi-Viz clothing.... every helps on these dangerous streets that we ride. I wanted to chime in with some other riding tips that work well for me:

1. Wear a white helmet. The most visible color in all weather conditions.
2. Install and use a headlight modulator. Seriously, one of the most EFFECTIVE safety device you can install on a motorcycle. All motorcycles should come standard with them. I run them on all of my bikes.
3. When riding in heavy traffic; swerve mildly back and forth in your lane. Your erratic movement will be constantly sensed by those behind you; and those around you.

Lot's of other techniques and practices as well... I'm not going to preach to the choir here.... definitely watch your mirrors in stopped traffic. Leave a way out.
