I have had to adjust the clutch twice recently as it started slipping. I pulled the clutch apart as i wanted to also check the nsu screws. There was a lot of grey sludge in the clutch cover. (none in oil) The only wear seems to be on the first plate nearest the clutch cover. The bike was laid up for four years or so before i got it. The clutch plates themselves seem to be dry. Ie. No oil between the faces, is that correct? Excuse my ignorance as this is the first clutch i have ever pulled apart. I have put it all back together and put fresh oil and a filter in. Ran the bike and checked clutch operation and all seems ok. http://s1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/walesyg/

The sludge looks like there is or was moisture in the oil. I have seen it on the bottom of oil fill caps of cars that are driven for short distances and don't get to operating temperature. Meaning it doesn't get hot enough to evaporate the accumulated condensation that is created by warming and cooling. Was the oil changed after it came out of storage and before you started riding it?
Cheers, David.

It was supposed to have been done by the PO but it doesn't look like it was. I'll probably run it for 100 miles then change the oil and filter again to flush out the engine. I'm wondering if the plates were stuck together and this is why they were dry on the faces.

These bikes have a wet clutch system and ALL disks should be wet, if you have dry disks you have a failure of some sort.

Guess the plates must have dried out after sitting for a few years. I'll just pull it apart and dip all the plates in clean oil then re-assemble. Thanks guys.
