that looks like an oil impregnated bushing. with the shaft sitting in that bushing you will not put much grease in there anyway
a couple of drops of super lube whenever it gets noisy will do you better.

But would a 90 degree fitting not make it nearly impossible to thread the fitting in? I.E - Wouldn't the fitting hit the rear casing of the starter as you spun it around? Being that he drilled at a slight angle, i would think that just a slightly taller fitting would do the job.

Forget the zerk and put a plug in. Two or three times a year, a drop or two of good quality oil. Over do it (the reason there is no access on things like this) and you will foul the motor.
