I see you tested the voltage with the bare wires... but have you actually tried starting it with a solid connection to NEW plugs, with fresh gas in it?

I know it sounds dumb, but I'm a stubborn old coot and I don't always trust meters and readings and such. Plus I can't help but think it has something to do with that gas/oil mix you put in there. Maybe fouled the plugs, burned out the resistors, fizzled the coil. etc... my line of thinking could be totally wrong of course but that's where' I'd start just to eliminate the possiblity.

I wish I had new plugs, but everything is closed today. Or else, replacing with new plugs have been the first thing I would have done. However I tried some other slightly used OEM plugs with no luck getting them to fire. I supposed I cant completely rule out the fact that maybe DR650 spark plugs will not try to spark unless they are new and installed in the head. The old ones still spark on a different bike. Nonetheless I ordered a new coil, caps, and plugs.

Well, good luck and let us know if that fixes it. :s_thumbsup

It's hard to diagnose stuff over the internet, I wish I could be there to help ya... they say 1-1/2 heads are better than one... mine being the 1/2 that is.

It's just when you said you put mixed gas in there, that jumped out at me. Usually it's the one seemingly insignificant thing that was done differently that causes the problem. But you can't rule out coincidence either... might have nothing at all to do with it. :s_dunno

Thinking about that statement, and about the mixed gas. I suppose what I did different that day was ride the bike real slow for a total of 3 hours because the fiance was behind me just learning to ride. We were putt putting around at 10 MPH and less, in the mud and up little hills. This slow riding, in combination with the mixed gas, is the reason I started to think the plugs were fouled. As a critical thinker, maybe there COULD be a link between high-load (300 pound rider in the mud) IMS tank installed right above the coil, low speed riding and the coil giving out.
Vibration + Heat?

Yep, slow riding/oil/gas mix has been known to foul plugs... mostly in 2-strokes but it can happen in a 4-stroke when there's oil in the gas.

Just a thought - combining this thread with the spark plug thread we're also discussing... using dual electrode plugs might be another factor. I know it goes against the '2 electrodes are better' theory, but IMO the single electrode iridium plug is a lot harder to foul. That's one reason I use 'em.

When you get your parts in, it might be interesting if you just install the new caps and plugs first to see of that fixes it. If it does, you might be able to return the coil if you don't open the package right away... :pardon:

Ordered a pickup coil, ignition coil/caps, etc. and spark plugs last Monday. Waiting for them to arrive. I sure do miss Riding... 76 today and 74 degrees tomorrow :-(

Welp, I got my parts, The first thing I replaced was the pickup pulser coil. I then put everything back together, put one end of the old spark plug against the engine head, and hit the start button.. It Immediately started to spark. YAY! :yahoo: ! I went ahead and replaced the old ignition coil, caps, and spark plugs with the new ones anyways, beats paying 20% restocking fee plus shipping to return them.

My concern is I could NOT find the heat dissapating tube that goes around the pickup wires inside the stator case until 30 minutes after I put everything back together. I swear it was in the same place that I looked 25 times. :fool:

While I am waiting on the battery to charge (I thought Shorai's didn't discharge much over 10 days time?)....I am wondering, the replacement pickup had rubber instead of the stringy yarn insuluation... what the chances are that this insulation inside the case will melt or worse without the heat tube? :dunno:

Congrats! :drinks: So what made you replace the pickup coil first and try it... gut instinct, or you found it was the logical culprit through deductive reasoning?

Anyway, glad you got 'er running and at least all the new parts will give you peace of mind even if they weren't all absolutely necessary. :s_thumbsup

I Googled "DR650 no spark" and seen that the user "Procycle" and a few others had suggested the pulser coil is the culprit.

Thanks Procycle! And Thanks Dustdevil for your input as well.

Now, what do all you guys think the chances are that the rubber wire insulation will fail without the heat tube in place? Thoughts?
