Hi everyone, After reading much on the net and on this forum about this great bike.
I just got myself a 1998 - DR 650 with 40.000 km in the odometer.
The model is unfortunately discontinued since 2001 in Brazil, but since i have a reasonably good mechanical knowledge and knowing the model is still unchanged in the USA, with lots of parts available that fit the Brazilian 98 model, i decided to go for the DR.

I was looking for a replacement for my yamaha XT 225 since i like to travel a lot to motorcycle meetings and sometimes on highways the cruise speed on the 225 (90 km/h) is not enough. i decided on the DR 650 and I´m already loving the bike.

Here is a picture of it. Lots of little things to do on it. like the tank that is a little crushed on both sides. but other than that a nice bike.
(Already got myself a IMS tank that arrived today from Procycle, to solve the tank issue)

Hope i can contribute to the forum in some way in the future.

Thank you, for the welcome mxrob, i´m really impressed with the overall quality of the bike, as a commuter bike it has already fulfilled my expectations, after i install the new tank, i´m gonna take it for a small road trip and check how does it fare as a short distance touring machine.

Welcome. Might suit you to take a few minutes to check the starter clutch.... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost ... stcount=21 Read here.

From Kientech's site: 1998 and early '99 were equipped with a solid idler gear that created a problem when the engine kicked back during shutdown, breaking out the gear bearing bosses. This also breaks out and destroys the left case half due to its ridged design. The case halves always come in matched pairs and cost in excess of $650.00 not to mention labor charges to change all internal parts into new cases. This should not be taken lightly. '96 and '97 had the torque limiter gear that is designed to slip due to a preloaded slip clutch arrangement. Well they went back to this design in mid '99 after vin # X2100561 so if your Vin # predates this you should consider installing this updated item

Congrats on the new to you transportation!

TrophyHunter, thank you for the reminder, i´m aware of the issue, the starter clutch is on the top of my priority list, when i install the tank i´ll check the carburetor, and other OEM parts of the bike that i need to purchase and order them all in one single batch next week, that way i can save on shipping costs.

I have a question, is there a way to know if the starter clutch limiter in the engine is the old or the new one just by looking? i could easily open the engine cover to check if i knew what the old one and the new fixed limiter looks like. Anyone got some pictures of both side by side?

Edit: I think i managed to find on the net exactly what i needed to know. Hope this can be helpfull to other menbers.
