Alright, this is something that would help a lot, and here's why. I find it really stupid simply because while I may RESIDE in WXYZ region, or town, I may be on the road and have something that I need when I'm clean across the country.

simple as that, this is the sole reason requiring a location in profiles to list something for sale/wanted is a dumb thing IMHO.

now, I propose something simpler. simply require a common sense location of the item being sold in the POST, along with a means of contact. such as saying PM or Email me if interested, or something.

otherwise, instead of doing things this way, require moderator approval, nuke a thread if it doesnt meet the criteria and PM the member informing them of such telling them why it was not approved.

Thanks for the suggestion. Frankly I don't see why you consider this a problem, let alone "really stupid" and "a dumb thing"... since you already have your location filled out. It'd be easier for you to mention you are away from home in your post when that's the case, instead of having everyone list it every time they put an ad in.

As I said before; it is board policy beginning when Ryde4ever created these forums and is clearly stated in the guidelines for this section. It's not too much to ask for free worldwide advertising, yes?
Plus it's simply a matter of common courtesy and communication... makes it a lot easier to calculate ballpark shipping costs before inquiring.

If you're the paranoid type, it doesn't have to be specific. If you live in a rural area like me then just give the general area within a reasonable radius people would be willing to travel to pick up whatever you're selling, or vice-versa. If you live in a big city it helps to know what side of town you're on.

Also it helps get people to fill out their profiles. Rob and I would like to see everyone's location filled out but currently it's only a requirement in the 'For Sale' section. We have enough to keep us busy as it is... a little cooperation in exchange for advertising your item(s) or finding something you need is fair and much appreciated.

I'm not one for "naming" a rule, but as I've stated before, it, like most things 'net related, can be completely false. DD, yours is a good example....I knew little about the Ozarks...so I bounced around the net. The Ozarks can be in at least two States, if not more. This doesn't really get me close for "ballpark" shipping and required me to go searching for what region it's in.

Maybe a suggestion would be:

For Sale / Wanted items listings shall include:
1. Item
2. Price if selling
3. Condition
4. City / Country / Zip code to be used for shipping costs

I'm all for this, plus if you're SELLING anything, pictures are a wise idea, if you want it to SELL.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of requiring moderator approval of any for sale/wanted thread as I suggested earlier to minimize the need to nuke a thread later. plus I get very annoyed seeing the SAME EXACT sentence in a thread from the SAME EXACT person. simply PM the person.

sorry, I'm just annoyed by consistently seeing "please fill out your location in your profile" posted.

If not for location in the profile how else would I know that Mxrob lives just down the street from me? I never see the guy riding around town? In all seriousness I am curious where other riders are from. You can pretty much guess who the Aussies are from their accent.

Like I said before, I can't believe you actually looked up the size of the Ozarks. Isn't it about the same size as "San Diego County"? :sarcastic:

I put 'The Ozarks' because I live outside a very small town nobody ever heard of about 20 miles from the MO/ARK border. If someone's profile said "SoCal" it would indicate an area bigger than most states... but that would be acceptable.

The reason for allowing a non-specific 'general area' location like this is actually a concession to the more private members who would rather not post their specific information publicly... so anyone interested in the item for sale can see the general area and if still interested can PM the seller for more details.

People already ignore the simple 'profile location' rule, so how do you expect more people to follow all those requirements?

When we sign up on DRRiders we agree to a set of rules. It's no different simply reading the top of the Buy/Sell section before posting an ad.
TH, you have yours already filled out, so you're all set to go... why is this a problem? :dunno:

So you want us to have to go through and approve each individual ad several times a day, and make everybody wait for their ad to go up when we can get to it? Aside for creating a bunch more work for us, it would also create many more complaints than the few we're getting currently (which are only found in this thread).

Not as annoyed as I am having to post the dang thing several times a day. :s_tongue And I DO PM the person when they haven't fixed it after several days.

But hey, don't attack the messemger... if it wasn't me you'd be seeing the same tiresome message from Rob. The only reason it's usually me is because I try to stay on top of it 'cuz Rob already has plenty enough to do keeping up with the Admin duties.

Look, I haven't nuked any ads for this reason yet, but that may change. I'm just doing what we've discussed and agreed to in Admin/Mod 'staff meetings'. Rob has been away over the weekend but will be back soon enough. If he decides to change the current system then I'll do whatever needs to be done... but given the small number of complaints here I doubt it.

No matter what we do there will be those who don't like it, you can never please everyone. :rose:

I don't know, but I'm not the one enforcing a fictional location. As far as the listing requirements I suggested, at least one could point at something that made sense. If "SoCal" is sufficient, there's really no point to the rule.

I didn't say it was a problem for me...just that it means basically nothing as it can be very general or completely fictional.

Done here.

+1...out f curiosity, I like to know if any other members are in NC. They might post about some great trail that I didnt know about. Or it can be a good way to find a fellow DR rider to ride with.

I guess it just does a lot more good than harm so I don't know what the fuss is about :dunno:
