G'day!

First slung a leg over a motorcycle at age 47, about 11 months ago. Bought a nice 2015 TW200 as a starter/learner. Took the safety course, got legal, put 4000kms on it in our short riding season, trading it tonight for a clean '09 DR650 with 6000kms, OEM skidplate, rack, risers, folding shift lever, and the tail light mode from whatever the heck that popular swap is. It has a metal base gasket, 3rd gear was addressed by 2009, and an evening in the shed will take care of the NSU screws and put my mind at ease. No signs of any thrashing, no evidence of any oil leaks, etc etc...
After figuring out what sort of riding I enjoyed, it was time to get something that could get me further out, explore further away, be able to take on the highway if no other option was available, haul more gear, etc. The DR seems to come out a the winner for ease of repairs, durability, availability of farkles....

I've found I enjoy back roads, dirt roads, fairly easy trails. I don't kid myself that I can turn myself into some kind of MX super star at my age, and I did a lot of challenging stuff with a quad over the years....now I'm happy to just ride and relax. Falling hurts, dragging machines through mud is no fun anymore, attempting things that will likely end up badly doesn't interest me anymore. I love exploring, and having the option to swing off a dirt road and see where all those little off-shoots go. The DR seems to fit nicely in that I can ride the back roads or highway and not struggle to keep up with traffic, but also have the capability to haul a weekend's worth of camping gear through the trails.

welcome fishguy! It is cool that you're taking up riding at your mature and responsible age! From my perspective, your introduction very nicely sums up why many of us love the DR. You're in the right place :2_thumbsup:

Sounds about where I am in my riding life. Scenery, enjoy the ride, find a burger.

Also, adding the countershaft seal retainer (if not there - can't remember the year they became stock) is a peace of mind item.

Welcome.
