So at 9:15 I headed out Paymaster Canyon Rd. It was cold but the sun was bright and a nice day of riding was ahead.

I worked my way over to the town of Silver Peak. An old mining town from the 1860's that now stays afloat by mining Lithium out of the nearby dry lake. As I rolled through this scrappy town of mostly RVs and trailers, I realized that everyone was probably watching football on tv and thinking about Thanksgiving turkey.

Image

I was still in high country after two hours and the temps hadn't changed much but knew that lower elevations were coming. Yay!

Image

I began dropping down into Eureka Valley.

The Eureka Dunes are massive.

Image

The road around them was extremely soft sand, tough going.

Image

Then I climbed out of the valley into Dedeckera Canyon. Found some challenging ledges and such.

Nice canyon.

Image

Next came Steele Pass and the long, rocky slog down to Saline Valley.

Image

Image

It took me two hours to go 45 miles. By the time I got to the Hot Springs, where at least a hundred people were doing thrir annual T-day potluck, I was running a little late. Not that I was HUNGRY or anything!

So I high-tailed it out and up South Pass.

Looking down into Saline valley.

Image

As I rounded the bend at South Pass I found this view just as the sun was dropping under the Sierras to the west. From here I had an easy 30-mile road to Lone Pine. Just in time!

Image

I got into Lone Pine right at 5, checked into the cheap hotel, went down the street and found a full course Thanksgiving Dinner Special at the Totem Cafe. Perfect!

Total miles 208, 7.5 hours.
Today I'm shooting for Beatty NV through the southern parts of DV. Time to suit up!

How's that Tractionator Desert tire working for you, compared to the D606 you ran last time?

Thanks for sharing endoquest! :good: I get a bit homesick every time I see desert scenery like this. Such great riding... but I digress... there is some great riding here in Michigan as well. :2_thumbsup:

The Tractionators are great and I really needed the aggressive tread in the sandy stuff. I'm running 32 pounds at both ends hoping to keep the air in them. I still haven't done anything with my suspension so I'm getting pounded by the billions of rocks out here, and why are they all triangle shaped? At least Oregon has round rocks.

With luck, Plonker, I will be at the TBC tomorrow night. BTW those were 4 oz. mugs in that snappy, not pounders.

Ok, so on with the show....

I left Lone Pine at 9:30, did a ten mile road ride to Cerro Gordo rd. This is another old mining area, it was very succesful. Now the road up to the 8000 ft. Cerro Gordo pass seems to be specifically made for my enjoyment today!

Then down the other side to Death Valley's back door.

I decided to take the pavement down to Panamint Valley. The late start had me behind schedule and I really wanted to hit Mengel Pass. Sometimes the pavement is worth it, and the scenic views....

Image

I fueled up at Panamint Springs and headed south to Ballarat and then the opening of Goler Canyon, pretty intimidating... but sooooooo cool.
