Riding along the logging roads, some rocky stretches. Heard this odd buzzing on the left side and noticed a serious oil leak. Shut the bike off to investigate and looks like I've punctured the crank cover cap where the hex driver goes? When I fire it up oil shoots out the hole. What the heck could've caused that?? Easily to replace. But is there more serious engine damage in the background?

No, unless you ran completely out of oil.

Lost about half the oil and ruined a leather boot in the process of getting it home. Thank god for this website. Is this a common issue? There was no impact to my recollection but a few rocks here and there against the bash guard.

Your advice is calming!

I have seen that happen when a manual impact tool is used to loosen it. Pull it off to look, see if it had been jb welded or something. It's pretty thin. It would be nice to find the bit that came off too.

Just FYI I recently bought a used Suzuki VZ800 Marauder stator cover off Ebay for the pocket-draining price of $8.40, total, shipped. The very nice chromed plugs on that case work on our DR's. I hope to post a thread sometime regarding what else I bought that cover for (it was not to use for a flower pot  ).
