el capitan wrote: That 1200 Super Tenere really is a brick! In my opinion a bike must either be high and light (Enduro) or - if it needs to be - low and heavy (Tourer). But high and heavy is a really senseless combination. Without question a BMW 1200, Honda Varadero or similar bikes are great tourers, but they feature an "offroad"-attitude they fail to deliver in real life. Try to turn a Varadero on the end of a narrow gravel-road, then you understand. And NEVER EVER drop that high-tech plastic bomber - for the money needed to rebuild it in all it´s "beauty" you could probably buy a new DR ... EDIT says: If you like the idea of a 1200 SuMo take a look at the Aprilia 1200 Dorsoduro! http://www.aprilia.com/en-US/Model/6175 ... rview.aspxLike the V Strom?.... ....it's a dual sport.... It would be nice to ride on nothing worse than dirt or gravel roads. Picking it up would suck. You would likely find yourself bypassing the real interesting stuff like; creek crossings, overgrown abandoned logging roads, erroded roads with infrequent four wheel vehicle and deep sand and muddy areas.

In September I saw 3 guys on Super Tenres ride over Engineer Pass in CO with no and without knobby tires. Blew me away as I flailed my way across on my DR. Of course they each had a minimum of 20 years of riding experience, but it still impressed me. On the other hand if they had been riding solo and dropped one they would have been pretty screwed. With the DR you can get it back up by yourself even when loaded, but it sucks to do at 12,000ft. Don't ask how I know this.

I reckon the DR is a real bitch to pick up after you have already done it a few times in the last half hour, this thing would be even worse.

I have had mine since July 27th. I ordered it last year when they first announced the PDP. Waited the entire year just to lay eyes on one. Former V-Strom owner, had the 650 and 1000 but this bike blows both of them off the trail. Its a great bike. Last weekend at Buzzards Roost NC.

I recently returned from a trip to Moab and during the off road portion of the trip, everyone fell at least once and the DR was the only bike that could readily be picked up from deep sand without help. In deep sand or mud, the bike keeps trying to move away from you as you attempt to pick it up, (Much different from firm & dry terra firma). One guy tore a bicep and others tweaked backs. The bikes on the trip were as follows:
DR650SE
The others: all at least 100 lbs heavier than the DR: KTM990 Adventure Aprilia Capo Nord BMWGS800 Triumph 800 Tiger
The Super Tenere is in the same category as the other behemoths of the class:BMW GSs and Aprilia Capo Nord, all close to 600 lbs.
They all may be nice bikes but too heavy to pickup solo.

I believe it's good bike but it's completely different class of bikes compared to DR650. I would be happy if we will have Yamaha XT660Z Tenere in USA.

575 pounds with 6 gallons of gas on board doesn't seem too heavy for the kind of bike it is. That's only 60 pounds more than the wet weight of a WeeStrom. It can't be any different than a GS, then consider that GS owners make it a point of pride to bring around 400 pounds of crap along.
I think the S-10 would be perfect for riding from WA to Prudhoe Bay (lot of secondary roads and some gravel roads), then down to Moab and riding the White Rim Trail. I couldn't see going on anything more aggressive than the White Rim Trail with it. Seems perfect for fire roads and jeep roads. It's definitely at the top of my Post-Lottery-Win spending list.
I hope it sells well enough for us to see the 660 Tenere here (460 pounds with 6 gallons of gas on board). JP
