Just picked up a 2016 dr650 with all the barwork on it and am wanting to do a budget hunting bike setup, while still being able to use as a commute bike, but my commute is not city, but 30km down country highway.

Just looking g for tips and ideas for the budget setup so the missus doesn't notice so much the money going missing for the mods haha.

What have you guys done so far?

Wish list is..
Long range tank
Led spotlights with the highbeam for night driving
Panniers of some sort, can make these myself as am a military pattern maker by trade and sewing bags and packs is easy for me to do
Maybe put an icom 440pro UHF of it somehow
And definitely handlebar gun racks.
Maybe GPS mount.

Any tips for doing all this?
Biggest expense will be the fuel tank at $500 for the cheapest tanks I've fond so far.

Joeyjoe, is that Mackay as in QLD, AU?

I am sure you will be getting some suggestions on setting your bike up for hunting shortly.

Feel free to make a post here also: Who Are You? - Introduce yourself

I bought a Kolpin Tactical gun case that I'm planning on using as the left side as the pannier.
Going to mount it to the left rear peg bracket and the rear rack mount. Shouldn't stick out
much further than the rear fender. Looks like I won't have the side panel on with the setup
I'm planning to make. Should be easy to put on and take off as needed. Just haven't had time to
fab it up yet but I might be able to get some pics holding it in place.

Yeah seen those, but I was more thinking the rubber V grips mounted to the handlebars so I can get it quickly when I see something to shoot. The bike will be tailored to the property as you can't carry a rifle on the bike when traveling down the road/highway

That sucks. They're wanting to try and jam us up here state side like your laws.
One can only hope it doesn't go that far. Right now I can ride over to Colorado
and shoot Prairie dogs but with a magazine limit of 10 rounds.

I'm wanting to ride the Idaho adv trail because I know there is some good dog shooting
in the southern part of the state and then Wyoming on the way home.

But I'll have to wait until the elections are over since I won't be able till next year.
The cool deal is the Kolpin is lockable.

What do you guys recommend for a decent tyre that is suitable for on and off road use? Didn't want to go towards knobbies as they are a little too unpredictable on road and traveling at 100km/h on the highway.
Currently I just have the factory tyres fitted.

As you can imagine tires (tyres) are a frequent topic of discussion on the forum, and I think you would find it helpful to read these some of these discussions by using the search field at center above. Try different search phrases such as "50/50 tire", "dual sport tire", etc.
