How To Design Soft Luggage Racks For The DR650
This is a Happy Trail rack copied from GIVI. Note how it's curved around side panel, staying tucked in nicely. This keeps luggage weight
in board which aids in good centralization of mass ... a key to good handling on a loaded up bike.
The DirtRacks look strong, well made, but poor design due to build one size fits all approach. You would think that anyone reading the big DR650 thread on ADV Rider .... (where 23 million DR650 fans have checked in) ... it would be smart for a Vendor to build something
SPECIFIC to the DR650.
I would never, ever buy a rack that places my soft bags out in the wind, screwing up the handling, making the bike difficult to ride off road and On road.
GIVI designed their rack to actually CURVE around the side panel, coming up to 1/4" from touching the panel. Not bad. Problem with any of these racks is the attach point on the DR subframe. The factory tabs there .... BREAK OFF. Easily.
A good welder can restore the tabs making them stronger. This especially useful if using the type of rack that supports hard bags.
They have to be strong.
I like the light weight look of the DirtRacks racks .... just a mild tweak to shape to make it more "form fitting".
