This is a handy site to see the differences in the different years of the DR650.

Is there any place to get more current info? What's changed since 2004?

Sure right here.

- Color
- Paper to metal base gasket somewhere around 2006
- Countershaft seal retainer late 2012

That's about it.

The 2006 model also supposedly has the factory fix for 3rd gear failure which earlier models had with some frequency. Then in the past year a discussion on rebuilding the rear shock brought to light that the shock bladder now has a football-type needle valve in place of the schrader valve. This change seems to have occurred within the past couple of years.
Anyone know of anything else?

I don't know jack about mechanics (yet). So which valve type is better and why? I guess I'm trying to pin down what's the most recent significant upgrade to the DR so I can look for used bikes of that year. I'm actually hoping nothing too monumental was improved in the last few years... That means I can get the same bike cheaper!

I also read that the footpegs were changed to an alloy rather than steel, i have 2006 modl which look like steel which is good to me as i am planning on cutting and lowering. Hmmmm cast alloy is no good to me when i have a mig welder ready to go...dont know how much truth is in the matter..

This is an unsubstantiated rumor that keeps getting repeated. Unfortunately there is no evidence to back the idea. There was a part number change which could mean anything - or nothing. There have been more 3rd gear failures since 2006.
