Hi I ordered a Pat Wash Designs Cargo Rack about 2 weeks ago. I received it a couple of days ago and installed it yesterday. I have to say i'm really happy with the rack. The people at PWD were very helpful when I ordered it (I somehow screwed up my own on-line order form - wtf?!?) and it was very easy to install, it looks really good, works great and it's very well made. It probably took 15 minutes to install, at the most.
Wayne.

I looked at the PWD rack but wanted something a little bigger. Though you could always make/buy a removable aluminum plate to bolt to it when you want to really pack on some extra gear. Here's a link to a good deal on the plates by a inmate at advrider ( http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=646599). I did buy a PWD skid plate and have been very pleased with it and quality of the build.

Carry the bass combo amp on the back of the bike! :D Not sure if ye olde rear subframe would take it though. I gotta figure out a way of making that stronger...

Not sure I would feel comfortable with that thin plate sticking out that far behind me. It looks nice though.

It's close to 3/16" in thickness and for the rack it was designed for it's only unsupported for 1-2" in the back. Though the sides are probably closer to 6" unsupported. When I think about what I put near the rear of my rack for camping trips its just tent and sleeping bag stuff that doesn't weigh very much. I understand your concern but I guess I never really load my bike with too much weight anyway.

I'm guessing that ryde feels it might be something to slice a femoral artery, or something else important

I have the Pat Walsh rack, also. I like it, although it does look very plain. The simple flat aluminum construction allows me to do a few things I couldn't do with a more traditional rack, such as the factory Suzuki model, or the Pro-Moto Billet version. I can fasten a velcro camera mount on the Pat Walsh rack, drill holes in it for luggage mounting, and use it to drag the bike around without fear of damaging it. It is very strong and has a low profile, both of which are important to me. Oh yeah, it works well with the Mojavi and Coyote luggage systems since the bottom edge of the rack can be used for the clip mounts - much stronger than a plastic fender mount.
On the minus side, it is not as handy as a traditional rack when using bungie cords or nets. A traditional rack has more places to hook those kinds of straps.
As an FYI, I did have to trim the right side slightly (and I mean slightly) to allow mounting my GSX-R can. Just so you know.
I'd buy this rack again.

Just another thumbs-up on the PWD rack. I picked up one and installed it in combination with Wolfman Expedition racks & bags. No conflict between the two at all. I like the versatility and simplicity of the flat-plate style racks vs the machined ProMotoBillet rack or tube-style equivalents. It takes only a few minutes to switch between commuter mode (Givi monokey plate attached to the PWD rack for my E370 topcase) or distance-tourer (L-bracket to mount my Kolpin fuel cell vertically behind a large rear duffel). Apparently PWD is working on a similar rear rack for the DR-Z400S/SM as well, and I'm anxiously awaiting its release to add to the wife's supermoto. My PWD/Wolfman configuration:
