This worked well, so I need to share:

The tank is only supplied with rubber gromets to go into the top of the mounting holes. I installed them in the bottom, and used another gromet (or a few pieces of cut up inner tube) and a large washer on top. That prevents it from rubbing the frame.

The front of the tank was still loose and wiggly, so I looked around for some way of isolating it.
AND THERE IT WAS!!
That useless airbox snorkel. I cut it roughly in half, than sliced it lengthwise to open it up. Perfect fit on the top frame rail just behind the steering head. The tank mounts up nicely without any wiggling, and has held up well so far for at least 1000Km.
(sorry I didn't take any pics).
Now if I could only find use for the sidestand cut out switch, I have quite a few of those lying around as well...........

A couple questions

Which cap are you using for this tank?

Did you use the OEM petcock?

Thanks

The stock one. I read too many negative reviews of the locking one, check out the "most regreted farkles thread"
Acerbis petcock, seems a bit fragile, but the stocker would hang down even further.

Yes, the stock petcock places the fuel line about 1" lower than the Acerbis petcock.

And that results in the uphill fuel run being 1" taller. This has been a problem for some installations when the fuel level gets low. It's worse on the huge Safari (lowest fuel lobes/petcocks), but both the IMS and Acerbis have also had an occasional report of the bike stalling with fuel still in the tank.

The owner of this DR hasn't had any problems, but others have.

Thanks guys.

My understanding is that the stock gas cap does not fit the Acerbis tank. The remorse thread list the locking cap (extra cost) is an eventual fail. That leaves only one option which is the vented cap with hose. Is this correct?

If you are careful with the Acerbis locking cap (don't ham fist it) it will not break on you...

I've got the Acerbis locking cap and haven't had any problems with the vent as others have complained about. It threads on and off the tank a hell of a lot better than the original cap. The only issue I have is the rattling. It is loud and a little annoying.

I ran into a similar problem with my Acerbis tank, I installed the grommets with the fat part of the rubber facing up and that caused the bike to vibrate like crazy. Took me awhile to figure that one out, after flipping them so there is rubber between the frame and the tank that solved my issue. I find that the tank pinches slightly against the main wiring harness on the right side, recently had an electrical fault because of it (PITA) so shimming the front of the tank up with the airbox hose seems like a great idea.

For the tank vent on the included Acerbis cap I use this one:
http://www.motosport.com/free-flo-no-slop-vent-hose

I tried the standard little short vent cap and either some jerk stole it or it flew off :dunno:

I'm thinking of the same upgrade. http://justgastanks.com/product_info.ph ... ts_id=2716

So is the consensus to use the petcock that comes with the Acerbis tank or transfer over the stock petcock from the original tank to the Acerbis? Also, I'm guessing the tank comes with a vent hose but it seems like from this thread a longer one is needed? (And yikes to the electrical problem.) :s_mad

I've also read that the turn signal(s) need to be relocated when installing the oversize tank? True for the 5.3Gal?
